Space Craft and Biodome Concept

I was feeling very interested here in the alien life that might exist in a bio-dome construction located on a massive space ship or station. (I had in mind a variation of the O'Neill's Cylinder.) The life I depicted here is from another Earth-like planet with some edible vegetation. I used the composition (the placement of everything within the scene) to lead the eye to what I wanted as the focal point and then used increased color to further emphasize the "special" pod plants.

Fungus Warrior Speedpaint

Essentially, this is a battle scene between Fungus creatures and Insectoid creatures. I focused mainly on composition in this, while doing my best to add a sense of plausibility to the characters depicted and adding in some environmental and lighting effects. Enjoy!

This is a comic book-style sketch of the same character I did practicing with digital inking and coloring methods using PhotSH.
A future sketch will be include more elements from the first design. Particularly with respect to the hair and the sword weapon. I think this kind of female warrior character will likely have shorter bangs to aid in visibility in combat when her hair is not in a pony-tail.

The concept here was to design a magical vehicle that was for personal transport. I thought of ancient sorcery when I did this. As kind of a pleasure craft, I decided to place a kind of patio that enables the passenger(s) to see overhead and all around.

Rift Challenge - Death and Life Colossus Concepts

My first contribution to the Rift "Design a Colossus" Contest on Deviant Art. Since he is a Death Colossus, I chose to incorporate eerie elements such as spider legs that have hooves and a skull of a grazing animal for a face. The maces are for smashing the players of course, but so are his hooves!

This is my second contribution to the Deviant Art Rift Colossus design challenge. The Life Colossus, he is a reptilian and plant-like being that snacks on some of the smaller denizens of the jungle. Enjoy!

Babayaga and Chicken-leg House Concept

I depicted here the Babayaga sweeping away any sign of her passing with her mortar and pestal. Rather than show it directly, I tried to hint that spirits are racing about all around her with the blowing of the leaves.

This is the Babayaga chicken house. I was eclectic in deciding how her home would appear. I referenced older Russian housing and Russian forest terrain (which happen to be deep, richly green in some parts). I used the dark foreground trees to 'frame' the scene. The most intense color is on the house.

This creature design is of a species that is technologically adept, but not necessarily advanced. It exists on a large water-world. Mesas, plateaus, and small split and largely bog or swamp-covered continents stretch across this planet's surface. The creature here is omnivorous and consumes seaweed and fungi that its species cultivates on the beds of shallow waters. It lives in hanging huts and hammock-like houses underneath large, spacious root systems beneath massive trees.

It came down with a crash. Hohuik scrambled out of his hammock hut and skittered up the Jajoa tree his tribe had claimed centuries ago. Following the source of a tall column of dark smoke to the Weik mesa, he found a strange creature he had never seen before. ‘How did it get here?’, Hohuik thought, noticing the creature give its last breath after reaching for the oddly beautiful gold amulet that lay so attractively on the dank moss bed. Javi, his best friend, apparently saw it all happen, and later, Javi would share the story with the tribe’s elders, too. "The flying machine appeared out of thin air and collided with one of the great, bifurcated trees", Javi would tell the elders: "Both its wings came off in the air and spun like smairrangs into the moss beds. And, suddenly the main body of the great machine slammed into the ground- Boom!- sliding several yards before stopping."

My intention with this 90 minute speedpaint was to create a carnivorous aerial creature that snatched up prey in an Arctic terrain. I also envisioned it going after creatures that inhabit the surface or near-surface area of the sea in a cold environment.

This is an acrylic.

This is a concept of a Subterranean organism that is mostly carnivorous, perhaps responsible for some missing people in Siberian Russia. It is related somewhat to the naked molerat, but much larger. When people in a spelunking cave within Russia tumble into a new part of the cave system, they break open an entrance into the depths that release these in abundance. It's mouth spits a preservative slime.

I sketched out the figure of the model here using mostly vertical and horizontal lines and finding distance relationships among different parts of the figure. I then loosely located key values in the form so that I would have it to work with later on after class ended. In the cafeteria, I sat and drew in the mechanical elements from my imagination. The parts I imagined were inspired to some degree by the anatomy of the model so they conform better.

I think this is the final version. I usually like to let something sit around for a while and gaze at it once and a while before publishing it...if it is a fantasy illustration with no time limit on it. With conceptual illustration and most other commercial work, working with a calm sense of urgency and bringing things out in a shorter time limit as polished as possible produces different work in most cases.

This was great fun! It is one of my greatest passions in life to create characters and creatures, as well as props and environments. Well, they are very loose in connection to any stories I have planned out, past, present, or future. I just opened Painter with an episode of 6Teen on Cartoon Network in the background and had fun! I usually work on concept art with the mindset of a particular theme or idea and, almost like a mindmap, I work according to it - branching out in as many different directions as I can think. Obviously, I kept myself real simple and contained in this one, being sure to polish each one up nicely. I don't remember exactly the theme for this one, but certain commonalities in these guys start to point at triangular facial construction and applying this to a wide variety of beautiful animal forms in nature.

Been working on superhero designs. I used them both in a color theory project at school. Highly recommend color theory for anybody serious about art. Everything from interactions among colors to the symbolic meanings of colors is fun knowledge : ) The bottom one, redrawn from a Manga Studio Debut drawing, has a nice dynamic fluid motion to it. Painter has a nice inking brush that I used. Both were done in Painter.

Strange organism enjoying the sight of beauty

This extraterrestrial turtle-type creature is admiring the beauty of a flower in a strange city (not of this Earth). He was done in Zbrush (2.5d painting), moved into Photoshop CS2 for fast background rendering, then colored and cleaned up with camels and other brushes in Painter. I really enjoyed doing this guy because he is cute in his own way of course. The aerial perspective was accomplished primarily with the detail and impasto-like effects on Mr. Alien Turtle and the muted and morning fog shrouded architecture in the background.
